Roman junction on an international level, the new Roma Tiburtina station is one of the greatest urban constructions in our country. Developed around the concept of a "bridge station", it consists of two main atriums joined by an enormous glass gallery suspended above the last platform level.

    Originally named Portonaccio, the old Tiburtina station was inaugurated at the end of the 19th century. In the 1930’s it was expanded with the construction of a new head house, a building that was seriously damaged during the Second World War and later rebuilt in a simplified form.

    On the night of July 24, 2011 a short circuit caused a violent fire in the old building. The flames particularly destroyed  the relay room, which controls rail circulation. The fire claimed no victims or  injuries and traffic was re-established after just a few days.

    Designed by the Roman architect Paolo Desideri, with the collaboration of a team from the firm ABDR Architetti Associati, the new Tiburtina station was inaugurated by the President of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano on November 28, 2011. In occasion of the ceremonies for  the 150 years of unity in Italy, it was dedicated to Camillo Benso Conte di Cavour.

    Today, Roma Tiburtina is a fundamental connection to the city and the entire country: there is a bus terminus, it is also equipped with a subway stop and is served by all trains running north to south. Thanks to a great variety of shops  and services it is also an interesting point of reference for shopping for travelers and passers-by.
